Why Plastic Chairs Have a Hole in the Middle

At first, it seemed like a small favor. Your elderly neighbor asked for 2–3 plastic chairs for his yard — but with one specific request:
“The ones with the hole in the middle.”

When you couldn’t find them and brought regular plastic chairs instead, he didn’t complain… but you could tell he was disappointed. And there’s actually a very real reason why.

Most people think the hole is just a random design choice — but it’s not. It serves three important purposes, and for older people especially, it makes a huge difference.

1. Drainage During Rain
Chairs without holes fill up with rainwater. When someone sits down, that water splashes everywhere — or worse, stays trapped inside and grows mold. Chairs with holes stay dry and clean.

2. Stability & Strength
The hole helps distribute pressure when someone sits, especially on plastic that expands in the sun. For older people or anyone with back or leg issues, this makes the chair safer and less likely to crack.

3. Easy to Move & Stack
Chairs with holes are lighter, easier to grip, and stack more securely. An older neighbor can move them around the yard without struggling.

To you, it looked like a tiny detail.
To him, it meant convenience, safety, and comfort.

Those holes weren’t “just holes.”
They were the one thing that made the chairs perfect for his everyday use.
